The biggest mistake most people make when starting a yoga practice is attempting too much, too soon. I admire the desire to dedicate yourself to a daily yoga practice, but when you’re starting from scratch, doing something every single day is exhausting. It’s easy to fail when you overload your brain and your body with a new initiative, so if you want to do a monthlong yoga challenge, I invite you to start with a weekly practice.
The task? Complete four yoga classes, one per week. Length and style of class doesn’t matter much—you can do the exact same online class four times, go to four different instructors at your gym, or switch between a fifteen-minute vinyasa flow at home and a seventy-five-minute restorative class at a studio. Just find four and put them on your calendar. If cost is an issue, look for free options through community clubs or resources or web-based platforms, which usually offer a free first class or an introductory week at minimum.
If you start slow, then I have no doubt you can work up to a daily yoga practice. In the meantime, stay patient and humble; you’ll likely be tempted to skip at least one of these four sessions once you get going. I can say all of this with love, mostly because I’ve been there before. Keep it simple and don’t overthink it.
