Many of the settings in this book were inspired by Darien, Georgia, and McIntosh County, Georgia. Danny Grissette, formerly of Altamaha Coastal Tours, took me out by kayak twice to paddle through old rice canals, launching and taking out at McCullough Creek. The natural beauty back there is isolated and stunning, with so many juxtapositions of light and shadow—the perfect place for an ambush in a novel, I thought.
