AUTHOR'S NOTE

I took some liberties with locations in this book. There is no Woodstock, Kansas, for example—although hat tip to Nancy Patrino Russo for suggesting the name. (At least there isn’t a town by that name anymore; it’s now listed as one of Kansas’s ghost towns, with the post office closing in the 1800s.) There’s no Scofield, Connecticut, and no Keale College, either, although there are towns like Scofield and schools like Keale throughout the United States. And if you travel to Yarmouth, Maine, you’ll find lots of picturesque coastal vistas, including some of the thousands of islands off the state’s shore, but Codshead Island exists only in this book.
