––––––––
WE LEFT THE STAINED glass egg in the care of the people of the Undernest server. With the dragon safely encapsulated inside it was simply too large for us to move back through the portal. Besides, we did not want to risk the potential of Professor Booker opening it once more. The people of the town thanked us profusely for our work in capturing the beast and wished us well as we traveled back to the Grand Library. We said our goodbyes and stepped through the portal. Seconds later we were back in the library.
It was dark when we returned, and all the workers responsible for repairing the building had returned to their homes for the evening. The building seemed to be deserted. But as we listened, noises began to reach our ears.
“It sounds like it's coming from the main hall,” I said to Gunter.
He nodded and we walked silently out to see what the cause was. When we strolled out onto the bare floor we were shocked at what we saw. Perched high up on a banister overhead was Professor Booker. Even more shocking than his location was what he was wearing! On his head was the Dominus Venari and on his shoulders were the Golden Wings of the Pathfinder!
“Booker!” I shouted in anger.
The professor looked down quickly at the sound of my voice. He was so startled to see us standing there that he nearly fell from his position on the banister!
“What the – boys! How did you – what are you doing here??” he stammered.
“You weren't expecting us?” Gunter asked, angrily.
“Well, I, no! It isn't that! I just....” the professor trailed off.
“Cut the crap,” I said curtly. “Your dragon has been captured. The game is over, so just explain yourself.”
The look on the professor's face went from shock, to fear, and then to anger.
“You two.... JANITORS,” he spit the words out at us. “You should be dead right now. You never should have interfered with my plan! I wanted the wings and the dominus! They should have been mine! I should be ruling the Oasis server right now!”
“Why would you say that?” I asked.
“Because! I helped design it! And one day I was going to control it, but some fools went and made the server public for everyone! Now, this is all that is left and I won't let anyone take it from me! It's mine!” he raved.
“Professor,” Gunter said calmly. “You're a raging lunatic, sitting on a banister, wearing wings, and claiming that an entire server belongs to you. I think it's time that you turn yourself in and give us those artifacts. There's really no other option.”
“NEVER! The wings and dominus are mine! I will ne-”
As the professor launched into another string of rantings, Gunter had quietly picked up a broom from the floor. With the expert precision that only a janitor could have, he flung the broom like a javelin at the professor. The broom struck him square in the chest and threw him back off of the banister, and he tumbled to the floor with a tremendous thud!
“Nooooo....” the professor whimpered as I sprang to his side and removed the items from him.
“Well,” Gunter said with a smile. “This wasn't how I expected things to end, but I'd say our first adventure was successful!”
“I agree! And perhaps before we hand over the wings and dominus, we can have some fun with them!” I said, winking at Gunter.
