Part 7. Business

Chapter 23. Dear Boss

Resignation without explanation

Thomas Ellis, Personnel Director

Rolling Meadow Real Estate Agency

Dear Tom,

I am writing to tender my resignation as sales associate for the Rolling Meadow Real Estate Agency, effective immediately.

Thank you for the opportunity to work for the organization for the past six months.

Mary Ann Falcone

Simple resignation for advancement

Chase Davenport, Principal

Rolling Meadow High School

Dear Mr. Davenport,

It is with regret that I write to inform you that I will be resigning my position as a teacher’s aide at Rolling Meadow High School, effective at the end of the spring semester.

I have been offered a full-time teaching position at Woodbury High School.

It has been an honor and a pleasure to have worked with you and the entire staff at Rolling Meadow High. I am well-prepared for my new job.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to start my teaching career.

Sincerely,

Donna Curren

Leaving job for higher-paid position

Jill Hogan, Principal

Rolling Meadow Elementary School

Dear Jill,

It is with regret that I tender my resignation as a third-grade teacher at Rolling Meadow Elementary School.

I have been offered a similar position at Stepping Stones Charter School at a significantly higher salary. I am very excited at the prospects of my new job but also saddened that the Rolling Meadow School District is unable to obtain community support for a budget that would allow teachers a living wage.

Like many other teachers here, I greatly respect you and the entire team here. I am deeply indebted to you for the guidance and support you have extended. I came here fresh out of college, and your direction made me the teacher I am today.

I wish you, the staff, and the students of Rolling Meadow the very best.

Sincerely,

Judith Davis

Resignation to return to school

Peter Mann, Director

Rolling Meadow Historical Association

Dear Mr. Mann,

It has been a privilege and a pleasure to work with you and the rest of the staff at the Rolling Meadow Historical Association for the past two years. At this time, though, I am writing to tell you of my decision to resign my position in the technical services department to return to college and obtain a degree in museum studies.

You have been a most generous mentor, and I thank you for all you have done. I hope to stay in touch, and I hope someday to return to the historical association as a professional staffer.

Sincerely,

Tessa Sawyer

Resignation because of spouse’s transfer

Jack Dwyer, Sales Director

Rolling Meadow Times

Dear Mr. Dwyer,

It is with regret that I submit my resignation as sales assistant for the Rolling Meadow Times. It has been a privilege to work for the company for the past six years.

On a personal level, I will also greatly miss the chance to work for you; you are a fine manager and I feel that I have learned very much here.

After putting my wife through several moves because of my career, this time it’s her turn. Marylou has accepted a teaching position at a college in Ohio, and we will be moving next month.

I thank you for your offer to provide references and to refer me to sales jobs in Ohio.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Phillip Baxter

Resigning job because of illness

Maynard Fletcher, President

Rolling Meadow Savings Bank

Dear Mr. Fletcher,

It is with sadness that I submit my resignation as head cashier for the Rolling Meadow Savings Bank.

My medical needs are such that I feel I cannot perform my job to the benefit of the bank.

I have been privileged to work here for the past fifteen years. When I was diagnosed with cancer six months ago, my colleagues at the bank sustained me and made it possible for me to continue to hope for the best.

Now I must devote my time to my treatment and struggle with this disease. Thank you again for the opportunities I have had and the support I received.

Sincerely,

Roger Wilson

Resigning job because of family responsibilities

Beverly Kale

Director of Human Services

Rolling Meadow Electric Company

Dear Ms. Kale,

Please accept my resignation as quality control auditor for the Rolling Meadow Electric Company, effective at the end of the month.

For the past five years I have had the honor of working with the talented and supportive colleagues of this company.

Because of family matters that require my full-time attention, I will not be able to perform my professional duties.

Thank you for the opportunity to work here and all you have done personally to make my time so pleasant and my tenure so successful.

I would be happy to work with the human resources department to help transition my duties to another staffer and to determine a final day of employment that least impacts operations.

Sincerely,

Tracy Nagle

Notification of retirement

Joseph Cunningham, Director of Operations

Rolling Meadow Printing

Dear Joe,

I am writing to inform you that I have decided to retire from the company, effective June 10.

Forty-five years ago, I know I never imagined a time like this would come. I was just a young kid, fresh out of school, with big dreams and empty pockets. I came here for a job and ended up with a career and an extended family of friends that I will always treasure.

As much as I still enjoy my work, I feel I owe it to my wife and family to enjoy the fruits of my labors after all of these years.

On a personal note, I want to thank you for your friendship and guidance. I would be happy to do whatever I can to assist you in training my successor.

Best regards,

Sam Curtis

Courtesy letter to employer about retirement

To Stan Borden, Sales Director

From Hank Murray

As you know, I plan to retire this June.

Before I set an exact date, I would like to know if there is any particular time that would be best for you and the company. I would be happy to help train my replacement or assist in some other way.

Please let me know your preferences.

Requesting change to part-time employment

Linda O’Connor, Personnel Director

Rolling Meadow Manufacturing Company

Dear Ms. O’Connor,

I would like to request consideration of changing my work status from full time to part time.

I currently work forty hours per week as receptionist in the executive offices. I enjoy my job very much, but I have found it impossible to balance the needs of work and taking care of my newborn child.

If you would be open to such an arrangement, I would suggest the possibility of a job-sharing agreement with another person with similar needs. I know of several other new mothers here in town who are looking for a part-time job of this type.

I look forward to meeting with you soon to discuss this; I truly hope there is a way to accomplish this.

Sincerely,

Tara Nolan

Declining internship

Jill Hensley

Hensley Galleries

Dear Ms. Hensley,

Thank you very much for your offer of an internship this summer. I am honored to have been offered a position at such a prestigious gallery.

Unfortunately, I must decline. I have accepted a paid summer job at another gallery in Rolling Meadow.

As much as I would have wanted to work for you, I also need to save money for college expenses in the fall. I will be majoring in art history with a minor in retail management; I hope someday to be considered for full-time employment at a gallery like yours.

Thank you again for considering me.

Sincerely,

Jessica Christopher

Request for information about vacation time

To Human Resources

From Ellen Smart

I am hoping to be able to take a vacation in September. Please let me know how much accumulated vacation time I have available.

I understand there is an option to add as many as four unpaid days. Can you please advise me on the process involved?

Thank you for your assistance.
