4. Try to communicate regularly, and creatively.

 

Sam texted in the morning, wishing me a good day at work.

I replied with the same wish for him.

We’d agreed when sharing our schedules that we wouldn’t communicate during work hours unless it was something important, so I went about my first full day back like it was any other.

In the spirit of 1. Avoid excessive communication, when Sam’s post-work message came, I replied with something short and sweet.

Long-distance had a perk. I couldn’t waste time chatting like I might with a local new boyfriend in easy reach.

I used to text Davis when I was bored and that led to bad habits.

The goal was to say good morning and good night to each other during the week, then video chat on weekends.

Surprisingly, Sam kept to that.
