The assault team watched the diver pulled up to the chopper and waited for the cable to be lowered again. It wasn’t. They stood for another few minutes, watching the helicopter remain motionless above the water.
“Hey, there were two divers,” said Theresa.
“There’s always two divers,” replied Tony. “Something’s wrong. Where’s his dive buddy?”
They walked closer to the edge of ramp and looked at the water. The ocean’s surface, now silver and dark blue, remained fairly calm in the breeze. Water slapped against the ramp, but there was no sign of anyone in the water.
Popeye grabbed his radio and called the ship. “Hunter this is Alpha. We have observed one diver being pulled from the ocean and believe there is a second diver down, over.”
“Alpha, we are aware of situation. Eagleray rescue reports one missing diver. Believed to be KIA. Be advised, hostile animal may be in the water. Use extreme caution, out.”
“It’s in the water,” Popeye said quietly. He looked over at his team. “Okay, people. This thing wasn’t on the ship because it’s back in the water. Head on a swivel, people! Easiest way up is right here at the ramp.” He pulled the Hazmat facemask out of his web belt and looked over at Tony, then pulled it back on. Tony, Theresa and Wilcox all exchanged glances and pulled theirs back on as well. Tony could feel the hair on his arms standing up as he watched the water slapping the ramp.
