THE INHERITANCE WAS inspired by Victor Hugo’s home in Guernsey, Hauteville House. Having been on a couple of guided tours I found it gave a fascinating insight into the man himself. I then began to read various biographies, particularly focusing on Hugo’s fifteen years in Guernsey. An idea for my book began to take shape, and voila! Eugénie was born. She is in fact loosely based on another French girl who worked as Hugo’s copyist around this time, and one of the few fictional characters in this part of the story. Her family is fictional, but all those mentioned as part of the Hugo household, his acquaintances and the named local shopkeepers were real people. Many actual events are mentioned, but I have used my imagination when describing characters’ reactions and emotions.

I offer my heartfelt thanks to those who have helped me with information for this book and patiently answered my questions. Particular mention goes to the Priaulx Library, which offers a wealth of information concerning Victor Hugo, his family and his works. I am especially grateful to Dinah Bott, who was both helpful and encouraging. Another thank you goes to Stéphanie Duluc at Hauteville House who very kindly not only answered my questions, but picked up some errors in my original draft. Also thanks to Dr Susan Taylor for background medical information.
