Fair Isle fingerless gloves

Like the Fair Isle hat (see pages 2831), these gloves are worked in the round, so you just knit every row. You can try the gloves on as you work to check the fit; because they’re seamless, they’re extra-comfortable.

ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE

Each glove took around 2 hours to knit: 4 hours total for the pair.

ABOUT THIS YARN

Use any combination of pure wool or wool-rich-mix DK-weight yarns for this project. Just check that the yarns you use can all be washed in the same way. If in doubt, wash your gloves by hand.

YOU WILL NEED

60 g (approx. 2¼ oz.) of wool and wool-mix DK-weight yarn; 40 g (approx. 1½ oz.) of this should be in the main color (A) and 20 g (¾ oz.) in contrasting colors (B)

GAUGE

24 sts and 26 rows to 4 in. (10 cm) over Fair Isle patt on size US 6 (4 mm) needles. Change needle size, if necessary, to obtain this gauge.

ABBREVIATIONS

beg = begin(ning); cont = continue; dp = double-pointed; foll = following; k = knit; patt = pattern; p = purl; rep = repeat; RS = right side; skpo = slip 1, k1, pass slipped st over; st(s) = stitch(es); tog = together; WS = wrong side; [ ] = work instructions in square brackets as directed.

NOTES

The gloves use the same chart as the hat (see page 31).

To work from chart in rounds, k, reading every round from right to left.

Strand yarn not in use loosely on WS.

The chart does not show any changes of color in the contrasting yarn (B). Change these colors whenever you wish.

The gloves in the photo at right, above use some of the same colors as the hat, but you could use any combination of colors you like.

If you are working with a set of 4 double-pointed needles, divide the 48 stitches by 3, and put 16 sts on each of 3 needles; if you have a set of 5 needles, put 12 stitches on each of 4 needles for the main part of the gloves.

For clarity, the number of stitches for each of 3 needles is given in the instructions for working the fingers.
