Leopard-spotted headband

The texture of the yarn gives the leopard-spotted motifs in this headband a fabulous furry look. And if you miss a stitch when following the chart, the effect will be more authentic—no two spots on an animal are ever the same!

SIZE

This adjustable headband will fit an average woman’s head.

YOU WILL NEED

pair of size US 6 (4¼ mm) knitting needles

GAUGE

22 sts and 30 rows to 4 in. (10 cm) over motif patt in st-st on size US 6 (4 mm) needles. Change needle size, if necessary, to obtain this gauge.

ABBREVIATIONS

beg = beginning; cont = continue; k = knit; patt = pattern; p = purl; RS = right side; st(s) = stitch(es); st-st = stockinette stitch; WS = wrong side.

NOTES

To work from chart, read first and every RS (k) row from right to left, 2nd and every WS (p) row from left to right.

Use separate small amounts of yarn wound on bobbins for motifs in B and areas in A between motifs.

Twist yarns when changing colors to link areas.

HEADBAND

Using A, cast on 27 sts. Beg with a k row, st-st 6 rows.

Work in patt from chart for 37 rows. Cont in A, st-st 5 rows.

Work 37 rows in patt from chart. Cont in A, st-st 9 rows.

Bind off knitwise.

TO FINISH

Gather cast-on and cast-off ends. Thread elastic through gathered ends of headband, adjust to fit, trimming elastic if necessary, and secure ends.

TIPS

When working the motifs, wind yarn off onto bobbins for larger areas; just use lengths of yarn for smaller areas.

Deal with the ends as you work by knitting them in over stitches of the same color in the next row; the hairs in the yarn will lock the ends in place after just a few stitches. At the end, check that the ends are secure and trim off any excess yarn.
