MAKING A KNIT STITCH

Start by holding the needle with cast-on stitches in the left hand and the empty needle in the right hand. The yarn from the ball hangs at the back and, as described here, is also held in the right hand. Use your index finger to loop it around the needle. If you hold the yarn in your left hand, tension it by raising your middle finger, and catch it around the needle in the same way. Work into each stitch on the left needle in turn to complete a knit row.

In and around

Bring the right needle forward and under the left needle, insert it from left to right (called “knitwise”) into front of first stitch; swing yarn to the left, then up and around the right needle.

Through

With the tip of the right needle, draw a loop of yarn through the stitch on the left needle.

And off

Drop the stitch off the left needle to make a new stitch on the right needle.

HELP

I really want to use a substitute yarn. What’s the best way to find a match?

Check the information “About This Yarn” given with each design. Look for a yarn that’s the same thickness and texture. Be aware that if the fiber content is different, the amount of yards/meters in your chosen yarn may not be the same as the original, so you may need more or less yarn. Finally, buy just one ball and check that you can match the gauge given in the instructions and that you are happy with the effect before splurging on a large amount of yarn.
