They journeyed across a prairie bursting into summer bloom. Beside the rutted wagon track, cow parsley and wild indigo nodded in the springy new grass. Perched atop a jolting cart, Louis peered eagerly ahead through clouds of dust. This was his first trip away from home - his first trip anywhere. At the end of the long, hot day, they camped for the night, and he and his companions went exploring. Later, rolled in their blankets, they talked among themselves before drifting off to sleep under the stars.
“I hope we see some Sioux!” whispered Louis.
“Not me!” said Louis Schmidt. “They’re fierce!”
Daniel McDougall shivered. “I want to go home,” he whimpered.
