CHAPTER 7

Typical Orders for Fighter Escort
to a Geschwader (Battle of Britain)

Interrogation of Oberstleutnant Bär

At Kaufbeuren, Germany, 19 September 1945 Note: The Geschwader designations used below are fictitious

Jagdkorps to J.G. 4: ‘100 Do.17’s and He.111’s will be over Calais at 0950 hours at 6000 meters. Target: Port installations east of London. Bombers climb to 7000 meters to 7500 meters. Approach: Dover – London. Return: London – Thames Estuary – Dunkirk. Geschwader will protect bomber formation and will be reinforced by I/J.G. 3. Fighter sweeps ahead by J. G. 1. Extended fighter cover by J. G. 2 and two Gruppen of J. G. 3. Establish contact with returning bombers over Thames Estuary.’

Geschwader to Gruppen: (It is assumed that Geschwader is stationed in Calais Area). The above mission orders are transmitted. In addition: Assembly of Gruppen individually over Calais at 6000 meters to be accomplished by 0945 hours. Gruppen take ordered positions independently as follows: I. Gruppe left, same altitude as bombers; II. Gruppe right, also same altitude as the bombers; III. Gruppe right above, somewhat stepped up to the rear (i.e. for the approach with the sun in back). I/J.G. 3 in the rear of bomber formation in slightly stepped up formation. Important: Keep exact position, because other Geschwader will meet and carry on with extended fighter cover. Main job of J.G. 4 is direct protection of bombers, up to the limits of fuel supply and then return to their home A/D’s. Formation leader of Gruppe I will ‘weave’, when all Gruppen have joined up with bombers (RT). Formation leader of bombers then proceeds on his course. When weather is bad over target, ‘weaving’ of fighters means for the bombers to turn back. Primary assignment is protection of bombers and air combat only when bombers are directly attacked. Attention is directed to the fighter cover meeting them at the Thames Estuary.

After the mission: Mission report: Time of take-off, landing time, No. of A/C, special events (meeting up with bomber formation, flying formation of bombers, enemy intelligence), claims, losses, special observations (increased fighter defense, flak, bomb hits), No. of A/C ready for next mission.
