I wish to thank the many people who assisted me in bringing this volume to print. Special thanks go to Sheila Washburn who approached me with documents that she had inherited from her father Earl Caughey’s estate. They immediately sparked considerable excitement as they proved to be original documents pertaining to the Fenian crisis in St. Andrews. With Sheila’s approval, they became the genesis of this book. Research was facilitated by the cheerful response I always received to my many requests from Janice Cook, archivist, Provincial Archives of New Brunswick, and I benefitted from her ability to track down obscure documents and images. In addition, the staff of the Charlotte County Archives was only too willing to drop what they were doing to assist, in particular archivist Charlotte McAdam and volunteer Janet Craig. As always, Harold E. Wright of Heritage Resources in Saint John was ready to share his extensive knowledge and resources of New Brunswick history. Without hesitation, R. Wallace Hale of the Carleton County Historical Society provided his useful transcription of Lieutenant Colonel Baird’s Journal. Valerie Teed’s spontaneous response to a request from a total stranger for assistance was more than could be expected. Many thanks go to my friend of long standing, Colonel Roger Acreman, who patiently endured repeated tales of Fenians and still found time to critique the draft manuscript. Without the faith displayed in me by Marc Milner and Brent Wilson, the directors of the New Brunswick Military Heritage Project, nothing would have been possible, and in particular the guidance and assistance provided by Brent is greatly appreciated. Finally, it was my wife Sharon who, at the critical times, provided essential encouragement and kept me focused.
