Chapter 7

BRIDGETTE WAS PUTTING away the groceries when her phone rang, the continuous ring danced through her head as she rummaged in the great abyss known as her purse for the phone.  It was only after she dumped its contents on the table that she found the blasted phone.

The unknown number made Bridgette hesitate for a moment, "Hello."

"Bridgette, it’s Barbara.  I was able to get your number from Delores.  I hope you don't mind."

"No, not at all.  I did not think of even exchanging numbers at the funeral home."

"Well, it's not like you had a lot on your mind.”  She said, "But, the reason I am calling, is to tell you to get dressed.  I am going to come get you, and we are going to go grab some breakfast at Tommy's Place.  I think French toast is in order."

Bridgette really did not feel like visiting right now, but perhaps she did need some time away from the house.

"I can meet you there.  You don't have to come all the way out here."

"No, you would be saving me; I really need to get out of this house.  Hal is home and he is working on some of his manly projects.  He is driving me nuts, the kids are driving me crazy, and I just wanted a few hours away from the house.  Besides, you need to get out of that house, and take your mind off things, as well."

"All right.  All right.  I'll be your excuse to break free from that madhouse you call a home then."

"I'll see you soon."

Half an hour later, Bridgette and Barbara were on their way to the little southern café, Tommy's Place.

As they pulled into the parking lot, Barbara said, "We will be lucky if we can find a parking spot, much less one up front."

Bridgette saw an opening between a large SUV and a sporty little car and pointed it out, "Look, there's one.  Not exactly a front row parking spot, but it is a parking spot."

"You're making fun of me, aren't you?"

"Guilty.”

Barbara shook her head as she parked the car.  "Hey, I get excited even over the little things in life.  I am just happy to be out of that loony bin of a house.  Hal has the kids all worked up this morning about building a swing set out back.  Hal, the kids, and power tools are not a good combination."

Over breakfast, the two friends laughed as they ate French toast and caught up on their lives.

Once home, Bridgette had to admit that it felt good to get out of the house and have interaction with another person.
