Books
A number of books have been published on different aspects of pet bereavement. The following are those I can personally recommend:
Garner, Angela. Remembering My Pet. UK: Environmental Animal Sanctuary and Education – EASE. This colourful activity book is designed to help children aged 11 years and under through the upset of losing a much-loved pet. It is free to download at
Hanh, Thich Nhat. Fear: Essential Wisdom for Getting Through the Storm. New York: HarperOne, 2012. The author explains how practical techniques of mindfulness can help us all, and shows how to ground ourselves in the present moment and find the courage to face what frightens us.
Ironside, Virginia. Goodbye, Dear Friend: Coming to Terms with the Death of a Pet. London, UK: JR Books, 2009. This book shares the experiences of others who have gone through a pet bereavement and brings solace and comfort.
Tuzeo-Jarolmen, JoAnn. When a Family Pet Dies: A Guide to Dealing with Children’s Loss. London, UK: Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2006. This concise book explains how children grieve at different ages, helping parents to understand how to talk to their children about the death of a family pet.
