Ingredients
• 500 grams whole wheat flour
• 250 grams white flour
• 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
• 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
• 450 millilitres buttermilk or sour milk
• 20 grams butter
Method
1. Preheat oven to 230 degrees C.
2. In a large mixing bowl, thoroughly sift together your dry ingredients.
3. Add your buttermilk and butter gradually and knead together well using your hands or a standing mixer until a dough is formed.
4. Place the dough evenly along the base of a well greased and floured bread baking tin. With a sharp knife, cut an X along the top from corner to corner.
5. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 180 degrees C and continue to bake for approximately 20 minutes more. Be careful not to burn.
