INTRODUCTION

Money

‘Making money and doing good in the
world are not mutually exclusive.’

ARIANNA HUFFINGTON

I saw memes floating around on social media for a while asking, Would you stay in a haunted house for a year for $100,000? Hundreds of people had commented on them, saying ‘Sign me up!’

Why, though? You don’t have to suffer to make money. You don’t have to do things that are scary, against your values, or cause problems in your life. It’s totally okay for you to make money doing things you love!

Why are we in business? To help others and to make money. It’s straightforward. If you don’t help enough people, you won’t have a sustainable business. And without the money part, all you have is a hobby – sometimes a very expensive one! Helping people probably comes very naturally to you. In fact, you’ve probably done it all your life. Women tend to be great at the helping part and not so great at the money-making part. That’s where I can help.

Here’s some Denise real-talk: if you can support yourself, you should. Many people don’t have the opportunity, ability, energy, or capacity to do it, so if you can create a ripple of abundance for yourself and others through your success, why not? We live in a time of great opportunity – use your privilege and create financial independence for yourself and your family. There are no good excuses, so don’t let money fears hold you back from starting or growing your business. Claim your worth, support yourself, and use your money to do good in the world.

In this part of the book, I’m going to take you through the trickiest thing women face in business: money! We’re going to talk about setting and increasing your prices, where and when you should never work for free, and how to deal with awkward conversations about money (you’re going to have plenty of those).

Let’s get started!
