Contour Lines

Contour lines define edges. The contour of something is its outside edge or shape. However, specific features within larger shapes also have contour, including folds, eyes, ears and hair lines. All these may be described by simple line.

Drawings consisting solely of contour lines must rely upon the correct application of the principles of proportion, perspective and gesture to be successful. Accuracy with these elements will be extremely helpful to the viewer because, without tone, it might otherwise be difficult to “read” the drawing. Pale sketch lines will help you achieve correct proportions and perspective. Hold your drawing tool with a sensitive, delicate grip. You should feel the drawing tool make the mark, but you should not press so hard that you etch the marks into your surface.
