Using Size Relationships

Careful observation of size relationships is another way to achieve correct proportions. Compare the heights and widths of various objects and note the differences with tic marks before proceeding to the drawing or painting stage.

Size Relationships Are Important

Although this is a loose oil sketch, the size relationships—both height and width—must be accurate for the composition to be successful. The sizes and shapes of this collection of glassware and fruit are relatively simple, but they create an interesting arrangement.
