1. A medical friend of Socrates, who is also mentioned in Plato’s Phaedrus (227a, 268a).

2. The god of healing. The centre of his worship was at Epidaurus, but he had a shrine with a warm spring at Athens.

3. A legendary hero and seer who perished in the expedition of the Seven against Thebes. He had a shrine at Oropus near the east end of the Attic-Boeotian frontier.

4. At both Asclepius’ and Amphiaraus’ shrines, invalids bathed before sleeping; priests then interpreted their dreams in terms of possible cures.
