“KATIE? THE KILLER? No way, Troy!” Dana protested.
“Dana!”
“Troy!”
“Guys, let’s get her in for questioning.” Troy then turned to his men who were also in the room observing the security tapes.
Dana felt her stomach squeeze. Her heartbeat pounded in her chest. There was no way Katie could have done it. No way.
“But why would she?”
“We spoke to one of your temps from the bakery earlier. She’s here now. She’d told us that Katie had made a threatening statement at the café.”
“Terry?”
Dana’s mind reeled back to earlier that morning in the kitchen. Terry had been listening attentively to their conversation though not adding anything of her own when Katie went on about how much she couldn’t stand Shags and wished she could...cancel Shags like she canceled the subscription to her newspaper.
Oh, good heavens.
Of course, Grandma Rae’s words came back to her: “Remember to keep your words soft and sweet, because tomorrow you might have to eat them.”
It looked as if Katie might have to eat her own words now, God forbid. Katie was only blowing off steam when she spoke about Shags earlier.
“Your cousin Katie had the motive,” Troy said. “She had the means and opportunity. The video surveillance tapes proves it, Dana.” Troy’s eyes looked sad. He really didn’t want to do this but it was his job. What could Dana say? Her own cousin who helped her managed the Cozy Cupcakes Café was going to be arrested for murder and there was nothing she could do about it, except...
“Troy, did you find the source of the power outage?”
“The what?”
“The source?” Oh, boy. There went Dana Sweet’s overactive mystery-riddles mind. “If you ask me, Troy. It seems very convenient that Shags shows up here. Nobody wanted her here in town. Let’s face it, the holiday spirit in the hall got a bit of a chill when she came waltzing in with her date for the evening. And it seemed so coincidental that while she was near the dessert table, the lights went out. She was killed.”
Troy thought for a moment. “You do have a point, Dana. But for now, we still need to take your cousin in for questioning.”
Dana frowned.
This holiday evening was not going as planned. It was supposed to be ‘ tis the season for giving,’ not killing!
Oh, yoy, yoy!
