“ARE YOU SURE ABOUT this, Dana?” Detective Troy said, a concerned look in his eyes. She sat in his office after she’d told him her theory.
“I’m very sure, Troy. We don’t’ have much time. You need to get your boys down there at the garage to confirm my suspicions.”
“We can’t just go waltzing in and asking for client’s information, Dana. Not without a warrant. There are privacy laws.”
“I know, Troy. But that’s what the real killer is counting on.”
“Dana, do you know what you’re saying?”
She swallowed hard. She was really getting in over her head, now wasn’t she? But her hunch was very strong here. She needed to clear her cousin’s name and the reputation of the Cozy Cupcakes Café. Her Grandma’s legacy and business would go down to crumbs if word gets out they were tied to Shags’ murder. Not to mention a cold-blooded killer would be loose as a goose.
“You’re asking me to investigate my boss?” Detective Troy asked incredulously.
“I...um...I never thought about it like that, Troy. I...I guess you’re right.”
“I work for the mayor of this town, Dana. It’s not that easy to point sticky fingers at the big man, not without some sort of strong evidence.”
She sighed heavily.
“But, I’ll tell you what. I’ve got a car at the garage. I’ll ask some questions. That’s all.”
“And hopefully, they’ll be able to confirm my suspicions,” she said.
“Are you sure about what you thought you saw?”
“Troy, I’ve never been more sure. There’s definitely a change in color at the front of the vehicle. He recently had some paint work done.”
Troy frowned. “Good observation, Dana. I will check it out.”
If there’s one thing Dana knew it was that Troy didn’t stand for corruption in any office. He loathed anyone who abused their power in office. Anyone.
Dana admired his nobility and the fact that he would put his neck on the line to do the right thing.
“Thanks, Troy. Remember those torn letters I found in the garbage.”
He pinched his lips together. “Which were obtained in the wrong way,” he reminded her.
“Hey, I just happened to glance in the garbage. If there wasn’t a power cut at the time and if it didn’t take time for the machine to reset, he would have shredded the evidence of those letters from his son, the waiter.”
“So you think Shags found out about the son and was blackmailing him, threatening to tell his wife about the illegitimate son he had on the side?” Troy arched his brow.
“Something like that. But not quite.”
“Dana.”
“Troy.”
“Yes, sir,” a uniformed officer stepped into Troy’s office.
“I’m going to need you to check something out for me, Pete.”
“Sure thing, boss.”
“Dana,” Troy turned to Dana after Pete left, “I really hope you’re right about this.”
She swallowed hard. “So do I.”
