Chapter 20

“SHUT UP!” KATIE PLAYFULLY said to her cousin. Her mouth wide open with joy. “He asked you out on a real date?”

“Yes. Sort of.”

Katie and Dana stayed back after the café closed to clean up. Terry was off on temporary leave. They were short-staffed once again and in no rush to hire part time seasonal workers. They would have to take their time.

“What do you mean, sort of?” Katie said, wiping down some of the tables. “I told you he’s hot for you.”

“You told me he’s hot.”

“Yes, that too.” Katie grinned. “But cuz, I am so happy for you. You go, girl.”

Dana grinned. “Thanks, Katie.” Dana sighed. “Troy’s right, this whole case was really getting me all bummed out about Valentine’s and how love can be murderous. I think we were all beginning to feel a bit dejected. I mean you hear about celebrity couples splitting up all the time—but this really cuts the cake—no pun intended.”

“Yeah, tell me about it. And this chick was really crazy. I can’t believe I was her biggest fan.”

“Hey, you didn’t know she had issues.”

Issues?” Katie placed her hands on her hips. “That girl had more than just issues, cuz. She was a black widow spider!”

“Well, not quite.”

“Yeah, you’re right. She just pretended to like her beaus before she killed them.”

Dana shook her head and playfully rolled her eyes. “Katie!”

“No really, cuz. One thing I will give her credit for is her acting. She really did deserve that award.”

“She did?”

“Oh, come on, cuz. She had us all fooled with that public display of affection for Carlos, only to have murder on her mind the whole time. Boy, I’d hate to cut her off in traffic. I bet you she has an insane amount of road rage in that little body of hers, too.”

Dana grinned and shook her head. “Yeah, that really does give me the shivers. I can’t believe she ran over someone near her house then tried to cover it up.”

“Me, too. From now on, I’m sticking with the classics as my heroes. No more of these modern stars. You never know what you’ll get.”

“There are a lot of wonderful celebs who are genuine today, Katie.”

“But you don’t know who’s who.” Katie pulled off the autographed photo of Gigi from the wall of the café. Her eyes looked sad. “Well the last thing we want customers to see is a photo autographed by a murderer. That certainly wouldn’t help our ‘killer cupcakes’ label.”

“I know. Funny how things change in a heartbeat.”

“You mean funny how things change in a Valentine’s.”

“Well, let’s just hope that’s the last time one of our famous cupcakes turn up at the scene of a murder.”

“Yeah, sure. Let’s hope.” Katie grinned and shook her head.
