Chapter 7

DANA STARTED UP HER car and drove to the Berry Cove Savings Bank, near the Town Square. She pulled up across the street from Ned’s Antique store and shook her head. The place still looked a wreck. It was probably going to be some time before they fixed everything.

Later, when Dana finished making the deposit and left the bank, she couldn’t help but make a beeline to the area with the yellow caution tape. Some onlookers were passing by and taking snapshots with their cell phones.

She strapped her handbag across herself to make it crossbody so that her hands would be free then she pulled out her cell phone and switched on the camera mode.

She was going to have to do some sleuthing herself to see what really happened here.

She saw the tire track marks leading up to the Antique’s store.

“Yep, it was deliberate, all right. Unless he was stark drunk. But then again,” Dana tilted her head to the side and looked at the tracks leading to the store’s front glass and metal doors. Thank heaven’s there were no serious injuries but it could have been much worse!

There were still shattered glass and debris everywhere but most of it was already cleaned up compared to yesterday. Plastic covered the broken store windows and doors.

Dana shook her head with pity.

Then...

Her heart leaped in her chest.

There he was again, the same man she saw that was standing outside the Antique’s store yesterday, looking very suspicious. He was there again.

He was secretly taking snapshots of Dana from the side of the store!

“Hey, what are you doing?”

The man then shoved the camera into his jacket and started to walk off.

Dana didn’t know what got into her but she just followed him. He walked quickly and got into a parked dark sedan with tinted windows and slammed the car door shut. He’d gotten into the passenger side so the driver sped off as soon as he got in.

Dana tried to get the license plates but couldn’t. All she knew was that it was a fancy car with expensive shiny hub caps.

Darn it!

Who was that guy?

Her heart hammered in her chest.

And what on earth was he going to do with those pictures he’d taken of her? What was he doing there? Was he trying to find something? Steal something?

The man wore a dark suit and a jacket and wore shades and a cap, so she couldn’t quite get a good look at him.

She saw a card on the ground and picked it up. It looked as if it had fallen out of his jacket when he shoved the camera back in. The name Sammy was scribbled on the card along with an address. She would have to check it out later. She had a feeling the card might belong to this shady character. But what if he was some sort of a mobster. Maybe his name was Sammy the Hit or something like that. Who knew?

Her spine tingled. Dana didn’t have a good feeling about this at all.
