CHAPTER 28

"The children," Atarah paused, searching Lachlan’s eyes.

"They're already in the car."

Atarah shook her head, "My sister's children... I won't leave them here."

"If we take them, they'll have an Amber Alert out. We can't risk it."

"I can't leave without them. I made a promise."

"Fine, get in, but hurry!" He held the car door open, Amber already clinging to Atarah.

"What about our things?" Her bottom lip quivered.

"There's no time," Lachlan’s eyes were tender as he squeezed her hand. "Let's just focus on getting out of here."

Adelaide approached, rubbing her arms briskly. ”I'll help any way I can. Gavin is blind to what is going on...this ministry brings out the worst in men..."

"Get in the car," Terrell joined them, motioning Roxanne, Adelaide and the children to pile into the car.

They didn’t waste any time, turning at the end of the long driveway. Pastor Woolson stood in the doorway watching as his men jumped in their vehicles.

“They won’t make it far,” he smirked, addressing Mark who joined him.

Atarah looked back at the sound of gunfire, a rifle aimed at their vehicles.

“Get down, Love!” Terrell shouted, swerving back and forth, Terrell picking up speed in the vehicle in front.

Their pursuers slowed down as they entered the small town, Terrell making a sharp right turn. It appeared they’d escaped - at least for now.

Mark slowed down, not willing to expose himself in town, letting them escape...for now.

"Call your sister," Terrell instructed. "Tell her we need to ditch our vehicles."

Adelaide followed his instructions,  then searched for car rental places on the island.

LACHLAN PULLED OUT his wallet as Terrell started the ignition in the nondescript black van.

"Ready?" Terrell called back as Atarah and Addy fastened the car seats in place.

Atarah and Adelaide joined the children in the backseat, Lachlan riding shotgun.

Leaving the island behind they never realized that they had danced with spiders, yet the web refused to release it's victims quite so easily.
