3 The Legio IX Hispana (the Ninth Legion) met Boudicca’s men and suffered a catastrophic defeat somewhere near Colchester: the infantry was wiped out and only some of the cavalry escaped. The Ninth proved an ill-starred legion, but the theory, popularized by Rosemary Sutcliff in her book The Eagle of the Ninth, that it was finally lost in Caledonia is now disputed, with some historians claiming that the Ninth was sent east and destroyed by Persians rather than Picts.

32 And from the cremated remains of some of the victims of Dennis Nilsen, the serial killer. I used to drive the streets of north and west London every day throughout the late 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. One of my main cut throughs was Melrose Avenue, NW10. Nilsen lived at 195 Melrose Avenue and killed at least nine men there, burning their remains in the garden behind his flat. Although he sought to conceal the smell by putting a tyre on top of the pyre, I remember the sickly burning smell that often permeated the air as I drove along the road, never realizing its source.
33 The causes of the sex-abuse crisis in the Church were varied and are beyond the scope of this book, but one factor was the change of outlook that accompanied the Second Vatican Council. Throwing open the windows to the world meant also that the old strictures and sanctions became less tangible. Mark 9:42 (“If anyone causes one of these little ones – those who believe in me – to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea” [NIV]) should have served as warning enough. But when everything becomes possible, then nothing is certain, and the old conviction that punishment must follow sin was lost amid the general cultural shift towards a psychologizing of behaviour.
