2. The apostle Paul makes similar statements in 1 Corinthians 6:9–10 and Galatians 5:19–21; like Jesus in Revelation 21:8 and 22:15, Paul says that those who habitually, unrepentantly commit these sins will not inherit the kingdom of God.
3. For example, in Matthew 5:29, Jesus says, “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.” The Greek word translated “hell” is geenna, a transliteration of the Hebrew gehenna. Jesus uses this same word for “hell” in Matthew 10:28; 23:15; 23:33; Mark 9:43, 45, and 47; and Luke 12:5. The word gehenna originally comes from the Valley of Hinnom, a burning garbage dump that was considered a cursed place because it had once been the site of sacrifices to Canaanite gods. But it is clear that Jesus uses gehenna to describe a place of eternal destruction after death, where there is no hope of salvation or resurrection.
