oreo cake

This cake makes me happy in every way. Not only is it easy to bake, but it’s fun, looks cool, and is insanely delicious! I recommend making it for a large group of people so that you’re not tempted to eat more than one piece. ’Cause you (and by you I mean me) will be tempted. And then you’ll take a picture of it and post it on Instagram and ask your friends if you should eat just one more piece. And you know that you have the smartest, most encouraging friends, so when they say, “Yes! Eat it!” you’ll wholeheartedly agree. And then you’ll cut just one more piece and ask your friends on Twitter. And then just one more piece and ask your friends on Facebook.

And that is how to get fat from social media.

1 recipe Chocolate Cake

1 15.25-ounce package Oreos

1 recipe Oreo Filling

1 recipe Chocolate Buttercream

1 premade Oreo piecrust

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT:

2 9-inch round cake pans; offset spatula; fondant smoother (optional)

NOTE: If you can’t find a premade Oreo piecrust, you can make your own Oreo crumbs. Just remove the filling from 24 Oreos and pulse the chocolate cookies in a food processor until they’re ground fine.

DIFFICULTY: Easy

oreo filling

¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter

¼ cup shortening

3 cups powdered sugar

2 to 3 tablespoons milk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Place the butter and shortening in a mixer and, using the paddle attachment, mix until fully combined. Add the sugar, 1 cup at a time, alternating with the milk and vanilla. The filling should be very thick, but you can add more milk if you need to.

Baking

1. Lay 19 Oreos in an even layer on the bottom of a 9-inch round cake pan. Repeat in a second 9-inch pan.

2. Prepare the chocolate cake.

3. Divide the batter evenly between the cake pans, covering the Oreos thoroughly. Bake as you normally would.

4. Cool the layers completely.

5. Make the Oreo filling and chocolate buttercream.

Making the Surprise

6. Place 1 cooled layer on a cake stand, Oreo cookie side down. Using an offset spatula, cover the top with a 1-inch-thick layer of Oreo filling.

7. Top with the other layer, Oreo cookie side up.

Frosting and Decorating

8. Cover the cake in Chocolate Buttercream.

9. Working quickly, cover the cake in Oreo crumbs. Pour a small amount of crumbs on top of the cake near the edge. Use one hand to move the crumbs over the edge and the other to catch the crumbs and press them into the side of the cake. Repeat to go around the whole cake. When done with the sides, pour the excess crumbs back onto the top of the cake. Make sure you have a smooth layer on the top and sides. I pressed a fondant smoother into the cake to create clean edges, but if you do not have this tool you can use your hand.
