Chapter 43

Never had a day held more promise for Abby. She was aflutter in happiness and anticipation of creating a life in Charm. With Nash’s love to bind her, she’d gladly log the rest of her days there. Thinking of him and his enormous appetite, she’d make the market her first stop. She vowed tonight’s tacos would cancel her past culinary failure.

Abby sat on the floor with a toy mouse, trying to entice her kitten to play. “Orchid, why are you acting melancholy? You’ve two handsome suitors in Abra and Cadabra awaiting your next visit, and I’ve got Nash. Girl, we’ve got the world on a string. To prove it, you may count on chopped steak in your bowl later if you stay out of mischief.”

Orchid offered a sad mew and sauntered out to the porch.

“How strange.” Abby frowned. She’d make sure to invite Gita and the two cats for a visit later in the week. Knowing Gita’s rapidity with tasks, she probably had a list of new decorating questions. Abby had a few questions herself on Charm topics.

She called Orchid back inside the cottage. Draping the overflowing tote bag on her shoulder, Abby left for the market. She noted the sunlight’s brilliance was contrasted by a cluster of unusually shaped clouds to the north. Even the usual iridescent color was different. Did it portend something in Charm?

Once parked at the market, Abby glanced up at the sky again. A subtle rainbow had begun to form. “What did Gita say it meant when a rainbow appeared?”

Seeing Bill and Bob leaving the store, Abby dismissed the quandary and hurried to say hello. She felt a smile grow inside of her. “I see Barney’s wasted no time winning you over, Bob.”

“Like I ever had a choice,” Bob said, holding the leash as Bill held the cart.

“Ask him who makes Barney a special breakfast every morning,” chirped Bill.

“Looks like all three B’s are doing nifty to me,” said Abby.

“And it looks like from where we B’s are standing, our Abby looks pretty nifty having her beau staying in Charm.” Bob exchanged a knowing wink with his brother.

Abby shook her head. “News in Charm travels—”

“Yes, with the speed of light,” finished Bill. “Still, we’re happy for you and Nash.”

“Thanks, fellows. Speaking of Nash, I’d better get inside to shop for dinner.” Abby reached to give the dog a pat. “Bye, Barney.”

The men gave a wave.

Abby stood in front of the meat display, admitting that she hadn’t a clue what cut of beef made a steak taco. There were too many choices and no one behind the counter to ask.

“Hi, Abby.” Aubrey came running up wearing a toothless smile.

“My gracious, do I spy another missing front tooth?” Abby bent down to peer inside as Aubrey’s fingers pointed at the gap.

“It came out when I was brushing my teeth last night. The Tooth Fairy—”

Will appeared with a pouting face. “The Tooth Fairy isn’t fair. She didn’t bring me any Prism candy. Only her.”

Abby ruffled the boy’s blond hair. “Hi, Will. I’m sure the Tooth Fairy will visit you when your tooth falls out.”

“He’s an impatient type. I caught him trying to wiggle a tooth this morning.” Bella rolled her eyes. “Hey, isn’t it fantastic that Nash is staying with us?

Abby hugged Bella. “I couldn’t feel happier if I won the lottery. As I’m sure you know, I’m besotted with your brother. I fear some spell has been cast on me.”

“I heard the blurter bewitchment came calling. It’s quite the romance mischief-maker.” Bella looked amused.

“Is that what it’s called? Seems everyone has a different name for this embarrassment causer. You have no idea the humiliation I’ve suffered.”

“So, I’ve heard. You belly dance?” Bella’s laugh rang out.

“I don’t like belly dance,” declared Will before running after Aubrey.

Abby groaned. “Your brother is a dead man walking.”

“Nah, he’s a man who finally found love, and I’m beyond pleased. Listen, I’d better go find my two scamps. Come out for a swim and lunch soon. We’ve got a lot to catch up on and celebrate.” Bella kissed Abby’s cheek and hurried down the aisle.

Staring at the cuts of meat, Abby chose chuck steak. At least it said steak. Finding the remaining items on her list, she went to checkout. She’d deposit the groceries at the cottage and spend the remainder of her day in the lab. Plus, she’d have a chance to quiz Daisy on her date. “Could life get any better? I think not. Thank you, Charm angels. Blast it. I forgot to ask Bella for the antidote to this blurter bewitchment.” Abby couldn’t believe such a statement sounded perfectly reasonable. Two weeks ago— She didn’t want to go back in time, even in thought.

After stowing the groceries, Abby fed Orchid and prepared to leave for the laboratory when she heard the communicator chime. Surprised, she went to answer. “Hello. It’s Abby.”

“Good morning, my granddaughter. How nice to say those words.”

“It’s even nicer to know you’re here with me saying them,” Abby replied.

“Would you have some time to meet with me at the temple? There’s a matter of some importance which we must discuss. Time is of the essence.”

“Actually, I was heading to the lab, but I can delay if it warrants—”

“It does, Posy. I’ll count on seeing you within the hour.”

Feeling puzzled and a smidge uneasy, Abby grabbed a bottle of juice and ran out the door.
