Chapter 48

Abby parked at Angel Cascade and walked toward the trail, noticing the unusual silence. She continued into the woods. Where were her bluebird and squirrel companions? Where were the nature lovers? Hearing the falls, an ecstatic Abby picked up her pace.

She felt a hush as the path opened to an unexpected sight. He was there waiting. Abby broke into a run.

“What took you so long?” Nash hoisted her into the air.

“I hit a little bump along the road.” Abby pointed to her head. “I’m here now and never leaving Charm or you.” Joy coursed through her as his lips found hers. “Never, ever.”

“Good to know, babe. Welcome to Charm, to our home.” Nash laughed and released Abby to the ground. “Someone’s waiting for you.” Nash pointed.

Her grandfather stood a few yards away. His eyes shone bright with emotion.

A smiling Abby went to embrace him. “Grandfather, I know your hand was on my being able to return. Thank you for bringing me back. The formulas came with me.” Tears of joy cascaded down Abby’s cheeks.

“We’re grateful to you for securing the research.” He pulled out a handkerchief and wiped away her tears. “There now. You’re where you belong, with us. Go soak up the love surrounding you. I’ll see you later, my Posy.” Her grandfather nodded and slipped away.

Nash came alongside and retook her hand. “Your welcome home continues. Look over there. They all saw the rainbow and hoped it meant your return.”

From behind the trees, Abby watched in surprise as her friends came forward, smiling and clapping. She laughed as they formed a line to greet her.

William waved a document. “You couldn’t leave. You didn’t sign the Pledge of Confidentiality.”

“No, I didn’t. My mistake—or not.” Abby squeezed his arm as he moved past.

Gita held up a decorator catalog and Orchid. “I needed you back. We have my decorating project to do, and Orchid won’t eat. Here. Take her.”

“I promise to right both wrongs.” Abby accepted little Orchid and nuzzled her.

Bob and Bill said in unison. “We missed you and the bakery delivery.”

“I missed you B’s. Count on donuts tomorrow morning.”

Holding tightly to Nash’s hand, Abby moved down the line, hugging Daisy, Edna, Myrtle, Lillian, William, Elbert, and the others she’d come to love. They were all there to welcome her home.

Abby saw Bella, Sander, and the kids coming toward her. All wore huge smiles.

“I’m so glad you returned. No more skedaddling from us. Are we clear, sister?” Bella squeezed Abby’s shoulder.

“Clear.” Abby saluted.

“We’re all happy to see you,” Sander added.

Aubrey and Will tugged on Abby’s pockets. “Wanna swim with us this afternoon?”

“You betcha.” Abby looked at Bella. “I’m so blessed that Charm let me return. So blessed.” She glanced at Nash.

“Yes, you’re a special one, all right. And speaking of blessing, would you consider blessing me by agreeing to be my maid of honor at Christmas? We know we’re moving fast, but—” Bella winked at Sander.

“But it’s Charm time,” added Sander.

Nash stepped closer. “Excuse me, just a Charm minute. Congrats, you two, but did you say maid of honor?”

Bella thumped Nash on his chest. “I sure did, big brother. What’s wrong with that?”

“Plenty.” Nash planted a kiss on Abby’s mouth and looked into her eyes. “I’m sorta hoping you’d rather be Bella’s matron of honor.”

Abby pulled back, awash in love and surprise. “Nash Walker, if that’s your idea of a romantic marriage proposal—I accept. Now, kiss me like there’s always tomorrow.” Abby thought, dreams really can come true if you find Charm.
