Bring
Your Life
to Work

36. My son didn’t rake leaves growing up, because we didn’t have leaves. But he did have a Madagascar chameleon named Zeppo, so he created an eye shadow collection based on Zeppo’s colors.

I realize creating eye shadows inspired by a Madagascar chameleon isn’t for everyone. But if you work, you likely have a place of work. And you can bring your kid to that place and let him (or her) poke around.

In my case, Trent came to the office, he joined me on trips to the mall to visit boutiques, he came to my speaking gigs, and he even joined me on QVC. He watched. He listened. He learned what I was up to. Then he mixed it all up for himself in an idea for eye shadows.

Today, sweet Zeppo is gone. (He spent his last days in a cage in Trent’s bedroom, hanging upside down from a tree branch, before climbing into his final resting place: the cardboard coffin custom-made by Keith. Now that is a handy man!) But Zeppo’s legacy lives on, in more ways than one.

Making eye shadows means mixing loose minerals and putting them in jars. Trent’s company is called Spice Tribe, which blends loose spices and packages them in jars.

Coincidence?
