n Locator Map

Keizersgracht is known as “the emperor’s canal” and with good reason. A stroll along this canal takes in highly decorated façades, including No. 319, which is covered with scrolls, vases and garlands. After marvelling at the tiny 345a Keizersgracht, cross Huidenstraat to reach the magnificent section of the canal illustrated below.

Turn left on to Leidsestraat to head along the Leidsegracht, which marks the end of Daniel Stalpaert’s city expansion plan of 1664. It has a mixture of fine 17th- and 18th-century canal houses. Walk to Koningsplein, then take the left bank of the Herengracht. On the next page, the stroll will continue on Herengracht.
