Once the arsenal of the Amsterdam Admiralty, this vast Classical sandstone building was constructed by Daniel Stalpaert in 1656 around a massive courtyard. The admiralty stayed in residence until 1973, when the building was converted into the Maritime Museum. A renovation project has returned the building to its former glory, and the former artillery courtyard now has a stunning glass roof.

Visitors of all ages enjoy the museum’s interactive exhibitions and displays of maritime objects. Don’t miss the free audio tour. The open courtyard gives access to the three wings of the building, each with its own theme. Oost (East) has displays of maritime objects, paintings, globes and model yachts. In Noord (North), visitors can take a journey back to the Dutch Golden Age using the latest virtual reality technology. Climb aboard the East Indiaman Amsterdam: haul up cargo, crawl through the hold and even fire a canon. The West wing has interactive exhibits geared towards children, such as Tale of the Whale.
