A’DAM TOREN

Q14 Overhoeksplein 1 g Buiksloterweg @ 38 q Noord # Daily; A’DAM Lookout: 10am–10pm daily adamtoren.nl

Unlike most cities, Amsterdam’s skyline is free of massive skyscrapers, so Amsterdammers look across the river IJ at the 100-m- (328-ft-) high A’DAM Toren with some affection. An icon of the post-industrial Noord, this multi-storey colossus has become the city’s most exciting cultural complex.

The 22-storey tower was built for oil giant Royal Dutch Shell in 1971 and acted as the company’s headquarters until 2009. Many locals still call it the “Shelltoren” (Shell tower). Reborn in 2016 after a massive refit, it is now packed with places to eat, drink, dance and shop, including Moon, a revolving restaurant, as well as one of the city’s classiest hotels – Sir Adam.

A high-speed elevator whisks visitors with tickets to A’DAM Lookout, on the 21st floor, which offers an unbeatable 360-degree view of Amsterdam. This is the perfect vantage point for photographers, particularly at sunset. Thrill-seekers, unsatisfied by the observation deck alone, can soar 100 m (328 ft) above the city on “Over the Edge”, a two-seater swing.
