CORN
During my first day of second grade, the teacher went around the room and asked every child what they did over their summer break. My answer? “I ate corn.” I’m not sure why that was the memory that summed up my summer. Maybe because I had just eaten it for dinner the night before . . . oh, and also every night in August. This wasn’t grocery store corn—it’s what we called “farm corn” (because it came from a local Illinois farm stand). Farm corn was definitely my first experience with the concept of eating seasonally, and it’s how I learned it’s always worth it to wait for the best possible version of any vegetable.
