Margaret Avison was born in Galt,
Ontario. She attended public
school in western Canada, high school
and university in Toronto. Her first
book, Winter Sun, won the Governor
General’s Award for Poetry, as did No
Time (1989). She holds three honorary
doctorates and is an officer of the Order
of Canada. A Kind of Perseverance (her
1993 Pascal Lectures at the University
of Waterloo) was published in 1994.
