Three Months Later
Lily turned the key to the door of Brock’s apartment, excitedly stepping inside. She’d been spending more and more time at his place lately and was practically ready to abandon her own Manhattan apartment for his more low-key surroundings. He’d been asking her to move in with him for months, but Lily had been waiting until her law school plans were finalized.
She’d finally gotten her acceptance letter in the mail today and couldn’t wait to tell Brock once he got home from the precinct. Maybe she’d break the news to her parents of her acceptance into NYU’s law school and her potential move to Brooklyn to be with the man she loved at the same time, she thought with a grin. Why not give them a small heart attack right before the holidays? They wouldn’t be happy, but it was time for her to follow her own dreams for a change.
She carried the bag of groceries she’d picked up over to the counter. Pulling out a bottle of wine and fresh bouquet of flowers, she looked around his cupboards for a vase. Hmmm. She hadn’t considered that he might not have one. Oh well, no worry. She’d bring over a vase the next time she came by. The flowers still looked beautiful, and she was in too good of a mood to let anything ruin her day.
Ten minutes later, she finally heard the front door opening. “Lily, are you here already? Sorry, I was running late,” came Brock’s deep voice from the front hall.
“In here!” she called out.
“Fuck, Lily,” he said, walking into the kitchen a moment later to find her wearing the pink dress she’d had on the first night they met, calmly arranging flowers in a pitcher she’d found in the cupboard. “You know it drives me crazy when you wear that. You have no idea how hard I was the entire night we met.”
“I think I have some idea,” she teased. “We did get pretty up close and personal.”
“Every goddamn time you wear that dress, I want to take you,” he said, heat filling his eyes.
“And how would you take me?” she asked coyly.
“On the counter,” he growled, walking closer. “On the kitchen floor, maybe up against the wall, in the shower....” He stopped before her and bent down for a searing kiss, teasingly letting his hands rake up the back of her thighs like when they’d first danced together months ago.
“Mmmm...hold that thought. I have some big news to share first,” she said, reluctantly pulling herself away from him. She grabbed the acceptance letter from her purse and triumphantly waved it in the air.
“Is that what I think it is?”
“I got in!” she shrieked, launching herself into his arms. Brock caught her and wrapped his muscular arms tightly around her, kissing her slow and sweet, with the promise of more to come later on.
“Congratulations, baby. There’s just one thing we need to do first, before you start your brand new life as a fancy, hot-shot lawyer,” he said with a grin.
“Like get a law degree?” she teased. “I think they require them these days.”
“Before that.”
He gently set her down on the floor as she looked at him questioningly. Brock grinned and reached into his pocket, before dropping down to one knee.
“Brock,” Lily gasped, both hands flying to her face in surprise. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she could hardly breathe as she looked down at him in wonder.
“I know we talked about moving in together, but I want it all with you. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and the woman I want to spend the rest of my life making happy. Marry me, Lily Franklin,” he said, gazing up at her with nothing but love filling his blue eyes.
“Yes, yes of course,” she said, wiping tears from her cheeks.
“Don’t cry, baby,” he said, standing up and cupping her face as he softly kissed her. “Let’s see if this fits.” As he gently took her hand and slipped the diamond on her finger, Lily thought she might actually burst from happiness.
“I’m yours, Brock,” she whispered.
“Forever, Lily.”
