Chapter 39

Herbal Remedies for Varicose Veins

image

People suffer from multiple blood circulation problems, and varicose veins are one of the most frustrating conditions you may have to treat. Cayenne pepper is high in flavonoids and Vitamin C. These help prevent free radical damage to blood vessel walls as well as enhancing formation of collagen to keep these walls elastic and healthy. What’s more, cayenne comes with capsaicin, which is potent with an anti-inflammatory, blood thinning properties, as well as analgesic. Powder from this herb can help prevent blood clotting and ulcers as well.

Grape Seed extract is derived from tiny seeds in grapes, which have antioxidant substances like flavonoids, Vitamin E, and linoleic acid among others. The extract also packs potent vasoprotective qualities. It is responsible for preventing damage to blood vessel walls from free radicals and promotes the formation of collagen. This is a protein useful for maintaining elastic properties of connective tissues as well as improving the strength of walls in blood vessels. Above all, it guards against leakage of fluid from veins and subsequent swelling in legs.

Pine bark extract contains flavonoids, phenolic acids, and proanthocyanidins, all which help reduce varicose veins and the inflammation caused by this problem.  When taken orally, the extract helps strengthen walls of blood vessels and binds the protein collagen to redeem elasticity. It also improves circulation and reduces pressure to ease leg cramps and pain resulting from standing for long. Horse chestnut can be extracted from the leaves, bark, seeds, or flowers of Aesculus hippocastanum, a plant that is renowned for treating this problem and other circulatory diseases as well. It has Aescin, a vasoprotective agent responsible for suppressing the enzymes that damage blood vessel walls. Aescin offers an astringent quality, which causes constriction or shrinking of body tissues like blood vessels and others.

Besides, the extract helps with blood thinning, which enhances circulation while eliminating the chances of blood clotting that could lead to varicose veins. Not forgetting, it has an anti-inflammatory effect as well as a diuretic action for reducing pain or swelling in the affected area. You can apply it on any ulcers on your leg, but do not ingest it or use it to brew tea, as it is toxic. Keep in mind that this remedy is not ideal for people with bleeding problems and pregnant women.

Pot marigold works with virtually any type of skin problem, although this may not treat varicose veins directly. But in case of eczema, dryness, ulcers, itching or such skin conditions, preparing an infusion of this herb’s petals in boiling water and pressing it on the area could help. Besides, you can soak it in a warm bath, and add flowers for effect.  Its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce pain and inflammation, not to mention that it restores the natural skin texture through promoting collagens.  Other types of herbs to turn to if you have this kind of problem include Gotu Kola, Apple cider vinegar, and chamomile oil. All these can be very helpful in fighting the effects of varicose veins on your legs.
