Chapter 1

Chapter 21

Have you seen Eric?” Flip limped out of the kitchen and into the dining room, holding what looked like a peanut butter and potato chip sandwich. “He’s gotta have some of this.” He took a bite and rubbed his stomach. “Mmm . . . just like when we were kids.”

I stared at Flip’s horrible sandwich. Peanut butter oozed out on all sides.

“You want some, Riley. You know you do.” He grinned and handed me the other half. I don’t know why, but I grabbed it and took a big bite. I also got a napkin ready in case I needed something to spit into.

It was crunchy and tasted sweet. And smoky. Not too bad.

“What’s in here besides peanut butter and potato chips?”

“Peanut butter cups and bacon,” Flip said.

I took another bite. It was yummy. Surprising, coming from Flip.

Eric stumbled in the door, looking upset.

“There’s my baby brother,” Flip said. “Hungry? I got a great sandwich for you. Riley, give him a bite.”

I licked some peanut butter off my fingers. “Sorry.” I held my hands up. “All gone.”

“Oh good! I’ll go make more.”

Eric didn’t seem interested in a sandwich. “Bro, I need to talk to you.” He glanced my way. “Alone.”

I jumped to my feet and wiped my hands with a napkin. “I’m outta here. Thanks for the sandwich, Flip. I think I’ll make one for Rusty . . . as soon as I find her.”

Then I left. I walked slowly away, hoping to hear a little of what Eric had to say, but all I heard was, “Drew’s back.”

“How do you know?”

“I just do. So, what should we do about it?”
