Rusty returned to the bench to find me staring at the tree again.
“Are you okay? You look pale.” Rusty handed me her soda, and I took a long sip.
I handed her phone and her drink back to her. “Thanks. I just got the shock of my life.”
“Wow — that makes both of us in one day. I guess we need to go get some chocolate.”
“Okay.”
We found some chocolate cookies in the hospital cafeteria. “These will do, but they’re not as good as Shari Olivia cookies.”
Rusty smiled. “I wish we could go back to that awesome kitchen right now and bake some.” Then she looked down and frowned. “But my dad’s taking me home today.”
“Why? You just found your mom!”
“Yeah. He’s really upset about the whole thing. He says we need some time to think about what to do next. Diane — my mom, I mean — agrees. She says she’s going to arrange her schedule so she can come out and visit in a few weeks. My dad wants her to sign divorce papers.”
“What?”
“I know, weird, huh? My parents are still married after all this time.”
