Traditional Irish Soda Bread

You’ll Need

4 cups all-purpose flour

4 tablespoons white granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 tablespoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup butter, softened

1¼ cup buttermilk

1 egg

¼ cup butter, melted

Directions

1 Preheat oven to 375˚ Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a baking sheet.

2 Mix flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and butter in a large bowl.

3 Stir in 1 cup of buttermilk and egg.

4 Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead slightly.

5 Form dough into a ball and place on greased baking sheet.

6 In a small bowl, combine melted butter with ¼ cup buttermilk.

7 Brush dough with butter mixture.

8 Use a sharp knife to cut an X into top of loaf.

9 Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center of loaf comes out clean.

10 Remove from oven and cool on wire rack.

11 Slice and serve with butter and a bowl of stew!
