“YOU TALKIN’ TO ME?” is the iconic dialogue best identified with the 90-mph-talking director’s film Taxi Driver and delivered by his famously understated BFF actor pal, known more for a wry smile or cocked eyebrow than any kind of small talk. While we recognize these good fellas as symbolic brothers of New York City and larger-than-life lions of their profession, having made 10 films together, we affectionately embrace Marty and Bob as best friends and passionate artists. They met on the mean streets of New York more than 60 years ago, but it was the crime drama Mean Streets that brought them together way back when. It’s no surprise that art-imitating-life dialogue sprang up throughout their partnership; “Never rat on your friends and always keep your mouth shut.” They are old-school rebels who share an unwavering loyalty, trust, extraordinary friendship, and the occasional bottle of bold red wine and plate of al dente pasta.
