AIBILEEN CLARK + MINNY JACKSON Image

“YOU IS KIND. YOU IS SMART. YOU IS IMPORTANT.” These are the three lessons Aibileen was determined to teach Mae Mobley, the last child she would raise and the most special, so Mae could survive in the world. Aibee’s heart was as full as her mind was sharp. She was intent on writing her way out of Jackson, Mississippi, with her best friend and Jackson’s best cook, Minny, by her side. Minny too was smart, kind, and soon to be important—with a toughness born from necessity, backed by a razor-sharp tongue that often crossed the boundaries of 1960s racially segregated Jackson. Not known to take anyone’s shit, yet certainly able to serve it up cold. Minny and Aibileen triumphed over the deep-seeded racial caste system, as the most unlikely superheroes in a town of us versus them. Maybe we want to call them The Avengers, not The Help.
