WARNING: THIS IS ABOUT TEEN GIRLS!
SOS!!: REQUIRED READING FOR BOYS
LET’S BE HONEST, if art imitates life imitates art, then decades of Hollywood movies have taught us that teen boys are, for the most part, jocky, horny, loud bad boyfriends, “bros before hoes,” or nerdy, sensitive, friend-zoned geeks. And teen girls are one-dimensional, pretty OR smart, followers OR leaders, slutty OR righteous. Booksmart’s Molly and Amy break the mold: they actually are actual real life. Not an imitation, finally! Here’s the deal: calling all teenagers and listen up parents, you could learn something too. Adolescent girls, on the brink of adulthood, are layered: their friendships have depth, they are loyal, scared, joyful, filled with hope, refusal to regret, borderline codependent (oh please, this is what girls do for each other: stand up and protect against all odds MALALA!). Except when they don’t, and it is more devastating, more heartbreaking than any first romantic love—gay, straight, or otherwise. Molly and Amy aren’t exceptional—they are magical—but they are typical. And that is what is magical.
