THEY MET IN THEIR 20S, naïve, excited at the prospect of Thomas playing Steinem as a Playboy Bunny in the TV movie about her Show magazine exposé. Yet, as they say, the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry: when the producer looked at the eager young women across from him, proclaiming, “Oh my god, I don’t know which one of you I want to f*%$ first!” it was a death knell for the movie, but the birth of a thriving 50-plus-year bond between the star of That Girl, which made Thomas into one of the world’s most endearing feminists, and Steinem, Ms. Foundation for Women cofounder, etc., etc.! Over these five decades, both women have never stopped marching, raising awareness, and empowering new generations of people to fight for equality for all—gender rights, equal pay, issues that need a light, that require determined advocates. They are there for each other for the big things, like weddings and illness, and the close family moments like Thanksgivings. Raise a glass to this pair!
