Old-Fashioned Country Lemonade

 Makes 11/2 quarts


1 cup sugar

1 cup water

1 cup fresh lemon juice (4 to 6 lemons)

4 cups ice water

Ice

Lemon slices or wedges, for garnish


1. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and 1 cup water and bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Pour into a serving pitcher. Stir in the lemon juice. Stir in the ice water.

2. Refrigerate until chilled. Serve over ice, garnished with the lemon slices.

Roll the lemons back and forth on the countertop while pressing them with the heel of your hand to release more juice. Of course, there are lots of lemonade mixes in the stores, but nothing beats homemade.
