The reporting for this book comes from more than 350 interviews with people who had real-time knowledge of events, including elected officials, lawyers, activists, doctors, and everyday people whose lives were changed by the fall of Roe. Many interviews were conducted on the record, while in other cases sources spoke with the understanding that they would not be quoted but that their information would be used in our reporting. In those cases, we worked to verify their accounts with additional sources and through concrete records.
We combed through private documents, memoirs, video and audio recordings, family papers, thousands of pages of court records, and academic archives at Smith College, the Schlesinger Library at Harvard University, and Duke University. To guide our investigation, we compiled a 116,000-word timeline of abortion politics and policy spanning the last half century, based on thousands of contemporaneous news stories and dozens of books, and interwoven with the biographies, actions, and public words of the key decision-makers.
Our on-the-ground reporting included visits to sixteen states, as well as statehouses, the Supreme Court, the White House, Congress, abortion clinics, and antiabortion pregnancy centers. We drew on our own notes, interviews, and published work from over the course of our careers at The New York Times, the Associated Press, Time, Bloomberg, and Politico. Stories with our solo bylines are not listed here.
