DAY 5: Letterforms

Letterforms created with Zentangle are one of my favorite ways to use and practice my patterns. I’m a bit of a lettering geek—yes, typography is fascinating to me—and I was one of those kids who practiced drawing letters in the margins of my diaries and school books.

Creating letterforms with Zentangle is really easy. You can use a pencil to create a letter outline (string) or just go freeform and see where you end up. I’ve done both, and they can be equally rewarding. I’ve got a small bias toward classic, old-form lettering because, with the Zentangle-added magic, they look like something from the Middle Ages, when everything was so carefully scribed.

DAY 5 PRACTICE

Use these blank tiles to freehand draw some lettering or maybe trace some letters from books or computer printouts. Try both and see what works for you.
