Chloe

Chloe had silently rehearsed her question in various forms, but in the end, she just blurted it out.

“What’s going to happen to the driver of my car once they’re caught?”

Officer Price shifted in her chair and her movements became more stilted. She finally spoke. “Nothing. The detectives need to conduct their investigation.”

“Yeah, but I mean after they’re done, and they know who was driving.”

“The suspect will be arrested. If they can make bail, they’ll be released until their trial. If they can’t, they stay in jail.”

She remembered bits of news she’d seen and her parents’ recent conversations. She wasn’t sure, but she thought that lots of people were getting let go for committing crimes—even serious ones. But this crime was murder and involved a cop. She couldn’t imagine if they arrested her that she wouldn’t be punished.

“Do the police have any clues as to who was driving the car?”

The officer smiled and shrugged. “I’m sorry. I can’t answer. Not because I don’t want to, but because I honestly have no idea what the detectives know.”

She was convinced that Officer Price had more knowledge, but she knew no more info would be learned from her.

She’d just have to wait until it was her turn to talk to Detective Ferrari. If it looked like they were going to arrest her, she’d tell them about Eloy and his blackmail.

She sat quietly, trying to figure out the best way to spin yesterday’s events with her as nothing more than a victim.
